Spring is on it's way! We've been learning a lot the last few weeks. Here's an update:
"Mrs. Warburton! Mango's head fell off!"
Haha. No, Mango's head did not fall off. Our hermit crabs are crustaceans. Which means that unlike mammals (like us), that get bigger with their bodies as they grow, crustaceans have to shed their shells. When they get grow, they have to molt because their exoskeleton gets to be too tight. It's like having your skin being stretched in all directions. Not very comfortable, right? When they molt, their tight exoskeleton falls off, leaving a brand new one. When they molt, their new exoskeleton is fragile. So it's best to leave them alone for awhile. So the 'head' you found, was their old exoskeleton, not their actual head.
See? He's still in there.

We did not have spelling this last week, but will pick it up again on Monday.
Missing work is mounting. If your student has any missing assignments, please work with them to get them finished, signed and turned in as soon as possible.

Valentine's Day is over our break this year. So we will be celebrating Valentine's Day with a low key party on February 11. Students should bring a box for others to put a valentine's in. Decorate it however you like. Bronco fans, you can even decorate a box or can to cheer for your team! Haha. Bring a valentine to share with each student in our class. We have 30 students.
Valentine's Day is a day to be kind and generous to those around you. It's a great day to show other's that you care about them. It doesn't have to be a day for lovers only. It can be a day of kindness to friends and those that may stand in need of a positive comment and a smile.
This week we talked about adding and subtracting mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators. We had a test on Thursday and some students are struggling. Let's work together to bring everybody to an understanding of how to solve those kinds of problems! In science we talked about what makes a circuit and how electricity works. It was exciting! In writing we have been talking about how to write an essay that compares and contrasts two texts or two topics. It's been a little tricky, but with a little practice, we are sure to get there! During our Read Aloud time, we started reading My Brother Sam is Dead. It's been really fascinating. Don't worry parents, it's a novel that is set during the time of the Revolutionary War. We've only read chapter one and so far we are questioning whether Tim (our main character) is making the right choice to admire and stand by his brother Sam.
We were asked to bring in different materials that were recycable or reusable for an art project. Each table got to design what it could look like. Our class voted on the Jolly Roger Flag as we are pirates! We each got to put a part of it together and then Mrs. Warburton sprayed the whole thing gold. Check it out! We think you can click on the picture to make it bigger.
This week in the class room we have been working on lots of different things. In science we talked about animal adaptations. In reading we have talked about different types of writing from different cultures. We worked on our math SAGE testing. In writing we did an opinion writing about weather we should keep pennies or not. Also in math we did adding and subtracting fractions. thanks for reading check back next week!!! By: Adam and Megann
Thursday was the 100th day of school!!! Mrs. Warburton pulled a prank on us. We got to school and saw this on the board. What?! Later she said that it wasn't individually, but collectively. Ohh Mrs. Warburton!
This Friday, we have a Planner Party! I know it's been long awaited! In order to attend, students need to have 80% or higher of their assignments turned in. Which boils down to missing more than 5 assignments. As a 5th grade team, we want to reward those students who have been on top of their assignments by completing them and turning them in on time. If students are missing more than 5 assignments, they can still attend on Friday if they get their missing assignments in. I have a lovely black basket with assignments that have no name on them. Be sure to check there first students, for your missing assignment before deciding to start over.
This week in science we did an experiment called Busy Beaks and lots more. We did half of our language SAGE test. In math we talked about adding fractions and converting fractions together. In reading we talked about different letters from different cultures. In writing we did an opinion writing about our favorite books.
Big congratulations to our new class presidency! We have Megann as President, Adam as Vice President, Eden and Kaylyn as Senators, and Xavier and Kenzie as our House of Representatives. We wanted to also thank our previous presidency: Jaron, Beverly, Kylee, Harley C, Sage and Dace for all of their hard work and help in making our classroom great!
